Kayaking and Canoeing in Lubbenau

Besides the boats that you can sit on and get punted around in, you can also rent canoes and kayaks in Lübbenau and travel around yourself. My friend described it as feeling adventurous in a very safe way. There are no currents on the canal, and even if you are terrible at paddling, as I was, you just bump off the sides of the canal and get going again. So beautiful to row through the nature and also see quaint houses on some of the canals.

    Peaceful and fun
Who would have thought, that just an hour out of Berlin, there lies a peaceful, romantic and fascinating forest landscape, waiting to be explored? Well, there does. The locals know it well, but for most tourists I believe it is a hidden gem. On a sunny day (important!), you take the local train to Lübbenau. It takes about an hour. Lübbenau is a small, very charming town, and from here you can rent a canoe or join a boat trip. Hiking and bike riding is also recommended. We rented a canoe (Around 12 €) and got a map with some trip suggestions. The river Spree, which runs through Berlin, divides in the Spreewald into several connecting canals, maybe 8-10 meters wide. Perfect for leisure paddling. However: the canal waterways connect through a series of canal floodgates. They can be tricky to maneuver through, and you have to wait for the gate keeper to let you through. Several times we had to get out of the canoe and drag it, on a designated path next to the gate, because there wasn't anyone there to open it for us. It shouldn't be a problem as long as at least one of you are able-bodied. We chose the route ourselves, and paddled along the canals for 3-4 hours. We went from Lübbenau to the island restaurant Wotschofska (a must), and back to Lübbenau through Lehde. In Lehde you paddle past many riverside inns and small holiday houses. Charming! For families, couples (all ages) or if in Berlin and tired of concrete, traffic and shopping, this is a lovely day trip.

A great way to spend an hour or two
I visited Lubbenau in September for a friends wedding - part of the day was a boat trip for the wedding guests. It was very beautiful and relaxing, I'd recommend this if you visit Lubbenau.
