Historical Museum Honoring a Colombian Hero
Antonio Ricaurte was a captain during the Independence War. He sacrificed himself at the Battle of San Mateo in Venezuela by blowing up a huge supply of munitions to prevent the Spanish from capturing them. This is his birthplace. His heroism is a symbol for the Colombian Air Force - it's first plane was named after him. Besides historical artifacts from his birthplace the house also includes a small collection of memorabilia and information from both the Colombian and Venezuelan Air Forces. Admission is free - the museum is run by the Colombian Air Force. This house/museum also has the largest and best gardens of any of the house/museums in Villa de Leyva. That itself makes it worth a visit. There is a statue of Ricaurte in the little plaza in front of the museum.

Small, quaint, interesting!
Only open a few days each week, this museum is small but free. In addition to info about Ricaurte, there is additional info about the military...and airplanes.
