Walled City of Cartagena, Bolivar Department, Colombia

Good to experience once but two days is enough

The old walled city is undeniably beautiful but more than any other town or city in Colombia, it is one long hassle of consistently fending off street hawkers and after a few hours gets a little wearing. Recommend taking a good guide book rather than a guided tour, all places within the city are easily accessible. There is fairly constant heat and humidity so dress light.

This company gives the best tours
I have done this tour several times. This is an excellent tour. If you book it ahead of time, when you get there, tell them you want a tour guide that really gives you interesting history of Cartagena or you will give it a bad review. Then, they will give you a good tour guide. All the tour guides might be good but I think if they see the people are not listening, they shut down a little because they think the people did not want to hear. Someone in your group needs to politely but assertively say when you are ready to move on. In other words, if they are standing you somewhere to try to get you to buy things and you want to move on, TELL THEM. You are paying for a tour, you are not paying to satisfy the vendors and buy stuff. I think there is a lot of beauty and history in this walled city and the tour is worth it. We also tried "the hustle" for the much cheaper tours with a group I was with in Cartagena and the guy hardly knew any of the history and it was not good. It was worth a try but this is a case of you get what you pay for. If you pay US$30 a person, you get a crappy tour. They are asking me with this review for attraction phone number and website and I do not remember other than when it is booked thru travel advisor it's good. I go in Jan. 2023 next and I will write down the website and local phone number.

    Great for a day trip
The old city is undeniably beautiful: quaint streets dotted with historic churches, convents and squares, and encircled by impressive stone walls. There are plenty of high quality eateries, a range of shops, and an interesting array of street vendors and performers, if those are your things. During the day, we felt very safe, though after dark the atmosphere got a bit edgy. If you've visited your fair share of European cities, Cartagena walled city might not seem all that impressive. The oppressive humidity can be energy-sapping too, so I'd recommend an early start to your day. We really enjoyed our visit, but one full day is more than enough to see all the sights.
