Top attraction in Tunisia, don't miss this.
As another commenter has mentioned, it's incredible that this park has so little reviews. For me, it was a highlight of my trip to Tunisia. We had hired a car so it was quite easy to reach. There was no one in the park at the time of our travel (February 2015) and it was a very refreshing change from the busy streets of Tunis. We (three 22 year olds) went of the walking path (not sure if this is against the rules) and into the more dense forest and it was an absolutely amazing experience. A lot of birds to see and cows roam around the park as well. The only problem with the park is a disgusting habit that is widespread in the whole of Tunisia: littering. The beautiful views are more often than not ruined by plastic bottles thrown away by visitors (mostly Tunisians themselves). If you do visit this park please take your trash with you. Nonetheless I absolutely recommend Ichkeul! PS: Free entrance, free parking, no camping allowed.

    Scenic + Birds
I visited Ichkeul with a driver, official guide and birding expert quite an entourage for what I thought would be a simple day of birdwatching. One major consideration is time of year. From a birding standpoint, I would check with a local guide or serious birdwatcher to time your visit right. Ichkeul was just one of the places we visited to find birds. Thankfully I found Tunisia Birdwatching on Facebook. They showed up on time to pick me up in Tunis and knew all the hotspots between the city and the park. We had the park practically to ourselves. The road ultimately seemed to be blocked by something that was being built. An SUV could continue but not our vehicle. There is a museum but be prepared for many stairs but the payoff is in the view. If the government would build boardwalks, bird blinds, better access points and trails, it would be even better. However, I understand every place is not like home nor is the funding necessarily available. But I think it would generate more tourist visits. In total, I added more than 50 birds to my life list over multiple stops including Ichkeul.
