Awesome place, less than awesome employees
This place is awesome and I highly recommend it if you have an interest in industrial history or history in general. We did a self guided tour so we could take our time. I took over 200 pictures. While the site itself is amazing, the visit process was less than. Its by appointment only and the website says you can call or email. I sent several emails and never got a response at all. As the date got closer, I bit the bullet and called. When we arrived at the site, we couldn't figure out how to get in. There are 2 different gated areas. One of them was obviously closed. The other had a sign that said delivery companies ONLY could open the gate. After we waited a while, I took it upon myself to open it. Turns out, we were supposed to wait on the guy Tyler to open it but that was never mentioned in the phone call, nor was it posted at the gate. That would have been nice to know. Inside, the girl working was very dry and rude. She kept staring at my abdomen when she mumbled to me. When it was time to leave, we pulled up to a closed gate (again) with several cars blocking it on both sides of the road. While this place is amazing, they REALLY need to work on the logistics of visiting.

    Amazing
Very cool look into the factories that built America. The self guided tour is well laid out with good information. The visitor center had a movie (unavailable at our visit due to school trips) that we were told is available on-line and a small hands on "museum" with cleverly written information. The star however is the actual furnaces/buildings themselves. I can't imagine how hot, dangerous and noisy this facility would have been when operating. An added "bonus" was that a movie was being filmed on location so we were able to see a bit of that process also. Wear good shoes as this is an outdoor industrial site.
