History Tour in a City Block
Each part of this city-block sized park holds a poignant vignette of the horrors and triumphs of the fight for civil rights in the 1960's. The highlight to me was the sculpture of the 4 martyred girls in the 16th St. Baptist Church bombing. The park is carefully and beautifully arranged to tell the story of the struggle of that time.

    Good but be aware.
Lovely park with amazing history. We were met by a well dressed man as soon as we got out of our car who began telling us stories of the time- his name is Walker and he is homeless. He was 8 at the time of Martin Luther King’s Birmingham protests. He told us all about the church bombing and gave us a tour of sorts of the statues. It was a good experience, although somewhat uncomfortable not knowing how safe we were in the park, and we felt as though we could not enjoy the statues in peace- he was a dynamic conversationalist but it was too much. He did ask us for money when we arrived back at our car, but we did not have cash. He wanted us to go to an ATM with him which we politely refused and went on our way. Be aware if you visit that panhandlers are common there and they may cause you some discomfort if you want to be left alone.
