The real Garufina experience!

Due to the pandemic, we were forced to temporarily close the center in March 2020. We reopened on April 12, 2021, and renamed the center to the Garifuna Cultural Center, you can find new reviews on that page.

    Fascinating, fun, and wonderfully friendly!
I visited the center on a quiet day so I could chat with Audrey about their work. From the moment I parked my car in Punta Gorda, I felt incredibly welcomed! I was greeted on the sidewalk and escorted to the center, where Audrey met me with a big hug and a very warm welcome. We spent the next few hours chatting about Garifuna history, her family and the diaspora, and the amazing work she and her sister Nora are doing in the community. While I was there, a women's group came to create artisan crafts to sell, kids came and went playing together indoors and out, and all the while I learned SO much about this island I called home for years. Knowing the general story of the Garifuna in Roatan is one thing - visiting and chatting with these passionate, interesting women is a whole other level. I recommend every visitor and local go to the center and spend time learning and contributing. Enjoy the community vibe and the cultural preservation they're working so hard to encourage. It's both fascinating and fun! Thank you, Audrey and Nora, for a wonderful visit!

    Local culture and history!
Audrey really spent time to answer my many questions regarding Garifuna history and culture, as well as sharing her family's story. A visit to Flamingo Cultural Center is a great way to learn about Roatan's unique history, as well as support the local community. Call or e-mail ahead if you want to catch the dance performances, as these operate on the schedule of visiting cruise ships.
