Would come here again in a heartbeat
While Fussen is a lovely and convenient base to explore the castles, I found Hopfensee tranquil and calm, and it was just what we needed to recover from the hustle and bustle of city life and jet lag. We stayed there for a night, and it felt about right. It was the perfect place to get in touch with nature. The lake, by sunset and sunrise, was out of the world, as were the quaint wooden jetties sticking out into the alps. There was hardly anybody out at 7-8 am on a September morning as the sun went up, and we had the lake all to ourselves. Do bear in mind, though that buses run on the hour to/from Fussen, and stop service at night.

Lovely view
Around the lake are quite some hotels, understandable because from there you have a lovely view on the lake as well the mountains of the Alp. The lake has a promenade with paid parking. You can also rent a paddle boat or canoe. The water of the lake is very calm also perfect for paddle boarding. The water was not as clear as expected though. Temperature is in the summer perfect for swimming. You can also walk around the lake.

A lovely lake surrounded by many mountains and a lovery landscape
We stayed for 3 days in a hotel at the Hopfensee. The surroundings are great, many mountains form a great skyline, nice footpath around the lake also accessible for bikers and a lovely walk of around 1,5 hours all round the lake. There are plenty of things to do: swimming, sun bathing, midget golf, renting bikes and boats and water bikes. Also surfing and sailing on the lake is possible. The whole area is surrounded by parking places, restaurants, ice cream shops and campings and this area is a lovely place for a summer holiday.
