Exploring I Sassi

Unforgettable visit!
Amazing place to visit for a few nights. Charming but touristy. We had a fantastic guide, Cosimo Santeramo, and would recommend him for your visit. Ask him for the wine and cheese tasting! You go into the back room of a cheese and meat shop and are served a variety of meats and cheeses locally produced, along with wines and olives. Still a highlight of the trip for me. The history of the sassi is tragic and inspiring and a story of transformation and collaboration. Visit for the experience of sleeping in a rock hotel and being constantly lost in the alleys of the sassi… If you have mobility issues you may find it difficult.

Beautiful Matera!! Look like Nativity at night
We stayed in Sasi Matera for two nights and it did not disappoint. We felt we were living in another era. We booked a private guide through Airbnb to get to know the history and it’s worth it!! The history made Matera even more interesting. So many movies were filmed here including the recent James bond. We find the food expensive and with an average taste. We suggest to have food outside Sasi Matera. At night seeing Matera looks like Nativity. We came in September and it gets cold at night, hot in the morning and afternoon.
