Beautiful small palace and museum

This former residence of the Prince-Bishops of Constance is an impressive sight, with its majestic staircase designed by Balthasar Neumann - and spectacular panoramic views.

Visit to the ‘ New Palace’ in Meersburg/Lake Konstanz
Meersburg is a delightful small town on the north side of Lake Konstanz. The ‘New Palace ‘( 18 th century ) and the old castle form a wonderful backdrop to a riotous amalgam of multi- coloured buildings. The New Palace was the seat of the prince- bishops of Konstanz who sought refuge in Meersburg when the citizens of Konstanz turned against them. The building is a Baroque/rococo mix, and a great contrast to other buildings in the town. Staff in the palsce were very friendly and helpful, and the attendant with whom I in particular spoke was very well informed about the cultural history of the palace . One was able to wander at leisure through various rooms, enjoy memorabilia relating to the reigns of the prince-bishops, and get a good insight into their life styles, and to the issues of the their, times. The palace is spectacularly situated in the upper town, above the lower town, with a commanding view across the lake towards the city of Konstanz. A comfortable ,frequent ferry service links Meersburg with Konstanz.

We visited the new palace in Meersburg. The building itself was beautiful but we found the exhibitions were not to our taste. However we enjoyed the garden and the beautiful view over the lake. The church was very beautiful especially as it was quite small.
