Rio Tomebamba, Azuay Province, Ecuador

4.5 (984 reviews) Spent Ranking #5 in Cuenca Bodies of Water

The rivers (rios) in Cuenca are fab.

Separating the colonial section from the modern residential areas of the town of Cuenca, this river features scenic walking paths along its north bank and several Inca ruins.

    Peaceful
We were lucky that our first hotel (Selina Cuenca) was right next to this charming river walk, otherwise I might've missed it. It's nothing spectacular, really, but makes for a peaceful getaway from the busy city and has many interesting sites along the way. When we weren't strolling alongside it, we enjoyed looking down on it from our hotel terrace or from our sidewalk table at the cute pizza place (Pizzo Tr3s) or our balcony table at Central Perk.

    An asset and a menace
Rio Tomebamba is a wild river flowing from the high Andes at Las Cajas all the way to the Amazon. There usually is a strong current even if water levels are not high. The city authorities have successfully converted the river banks, within the city limits, into a park. On the North side there is a trail for pedestrians from west to east and vice versa. Part of the way there is a lane for bicycles. Great for walking and cycling. In 1950 the river flooded part of the city and in case of heavy rains the river still poses a risk for those living on its banks.
