Must See!!!
Fairly easy hike that is 100% worth the effort!!!! The view is unbelievable!! You feel so close to nature and at peace with yourself in this spot. If it wasn't so close to sunset, this would be the PERFECT spot to bring a book or just your thoughts and stay a while.

Breathtaking
What a view!!!! This is something you have to see with your own eyes the views will take your breath away.....

Pico Matias, just east of the town of Altares, is a wonderful place to view the coastal pastoral terrain of Terceira from a high elevation. You access Pico Matias via the narrow Pico do Canada (Pico Street), which is a sharp turn off the main EN1-1 coastal road. Look for the small directional sign. Follow Pico do Canada to its end. You will see that the road cuts a path directly through a farmers field where both crops of grass and hay, as well as cows, call home. At the base of Pico Matias is a small gravel lot where you can leave your car prior to climbing approximately 120 platform steps to the top. Once there you will be rewarded with amazing photo opportunities, especially if the sun is in a favourable position (mid afternoon or mid morning is good). Bonus – check the mini trail via the bushy area beside the monument for a great close up view a coastal cliff. Rare Corey Shearwater birds fly in and out of the high cliffs here. Be careful though, as there is no fence at the end of the short trail and it’s a long way down!
