Museu dos Baleeiros (Whaler’s Museum), Azores, Portugal

Great Museum Honoring the Heritage of Whaling in the Azores

A fascinating museum from a repurposed whale processing plant honoring the whaling tradition of Pico Island and the Azores. There's a fascinating documentary made before whaling was banned in the Azores in 1982 (respecting the issuance of a global moratorium on whaling). Some wonder examples of scrimshaw as well.

    Interesting place to visit
It was quite upsetting to see the whale trade history - photos of magnificent whales being killed and gutted for their oil - they didn't eat the meat. It's a small museum but only 2 euros to go in and they have the old equipment and vehicles they used to use for the whale trade which ended in 1984. I'm glad I went but be prepared to be upset.

    Impressive and respectful
Not the biggest museum in the world neither the smallest. Welcome is good Collections are great, their shape is so well cared that we can't help to touch it (sorry to the guard, touching is of course forbidden) You can feel life at whale hunt time If you need interactive media you will have a short documentary in English or Portuguese that explain well the life in the late 50's / early 60's Thank you
