Lagoa das Empadadas, Azores, Portugal

A magical side trip

Don't miss Lagoa das Empadadas! We visited on our way to Sete Cidades and it was just magical! This was our first up close experience after arriving and we immediately felt that we'd traveled to "Fern Gully." Don't forget to check out the moss all around, it's a natural sponge!

    Peaceful and good walking country
Entrance is on the left driving north to Sete Citades. Not very well marked so you may drive past it. Drive up to the first lake and park there. This is a great place to stop for either a short walk around one or both the lakes that are beside each other. Alternatively if you have the time and energy you could spend another hour or two following the trail between the two lakes up to Lagoa Rasa and further into the hills to other lakes with great views over the countryside. As an earlier reviewer commented, breathe in the fresh air, it is good for the soul. The Japanese cedars make for a beautiful backdrop to the two main lakes.

    presidential
I was in Punta Delgada in December and despite being the sole booking, the local tour company were happy to set up a full day tour of the island just for me at their regular price. I had a driver and guide, a delightful Finnish young lady-Noora all to myself. It felt like I was the president of Portugal with this exclusive attention. Despite the weather the tour and sightseeing were wonderful. The Azores have not been spoilt by mass tourism and long may they stay that way.
