    Great for intermediate skiers
Val Thorens is the highest resort in Europe and so has a long season that starts in late November and extends until early May. We went in March and enjoyed a great week skiing on runs of packed snow since there was no fresh snow for a couple of weeks. The resort is ideal for intermediate skiers with lots of blue and red runs although there are plenty of runs for beginners and a few challenging runs for more advanced skiers. VT is also part of the 3 valleys ski area so there is access to the adjacent resorts of Meribel , Courchevel and Les Menuires so you can ski different runs every day all week if you desire. It is hard to review the skiing independently since a lot of the experience is governed by the snow and weather conditions. We had a week of clear blue skies when it was cold at night and sunny all day . The runs were a little icy in the mornings and the snow was packed hard so sometimes this made it quite challenging even on the easier runs. The connecting run from VT to Meribel is very busy in the mornings and when it’s also icy that makes it difficult to ski . Most of the accommodation in the resort has ski in ski out access to the slopes although some of the access is narrow and a little difficult when icy. The lift network is extensive with modern chairlifts and gondolas. We had avoided the peak half term weeks so we found very few queues for the lifts . There are plenty of cafes and restaurants on the mountain offering snacks and drinks as well as gourmet food if that’s what you want when skiing. Many of them also have live music at lunchtime and in the afternoon if you want to start your apres ski a little early! Overall VT is a great resort and is deservedly popular for a great holiday.

Great ski area, but too crowded
Great ski area, especially if you buy a ticket for three valleys and can go to different place every day. We had wonderful sunny weather, there was enough snow. Despite covid, the atmosphere was great as they didn’t complicate with masks and green pass controls. Only there were too many people on the ski slopes. There were also queues on some gondolas and some chairlifts and it was sometimes necessary to wait up to 10 minutes.
