Best Zoo I Have Ever Visited

I am an animal lover but have been put off zoo's in recent years as I find them to big, too busy, the animals are general too far away and the ones I do see look bored and/or stressed. This is the complete opposite. What an amazing experience. It is small enough to walk around in an hour or 2, and not need a rest, even though it is elevated terrain. Not too busy. But best of all you get to see, up close, a variety of alpine animals, in a natural habitat, who all seemed to be relaxed and happy. We saw up close, Vulture, Golden eagle, Ibex, Bison, Wild Boar, Wolf, Beaver, Moose, Lynx, Wild Cat and Pine Martin. Much better than London Zoo, Bronx Zoo, San Diego Zoo, Whipsonade and every other zoo I have ever visited. All of this to the back drop of Innsbruck and the mountains. As we were leaving late evening, the wolves started howling as if to send us off - capped off an unforgettable experience and I favourite excursion of our trip.

    A Zoo...plain and simple
OK so being from the South West area of the UK, I am familiar with Paignton Zoo, which, in my and many people opinion is fantastic. SO naturally, I was not expecting too much when visiting the Alpenzoo in Innsbruck. But we were in Innsbruck and the kids needed entertaining. So we headed up the hill to the Zoo. Pretty reasonable ticket price, think I paid eur25 for 2 adults and one child... my youngest was free under 3. In we go and the first thing I realised was that there would be some hill climbing involved! However, the layout is actually very well done and I have to say that the slopes, although there, were not long or indeed a problem. There is not much to say really other than, although the Zoo is quite small, there are some lovely animals to view and the scenery is pretty impressive... good views out over Innsbruck. They have a nice little cafe selling limited snacks but its enough. The seating outside overlooks Innsbruck and of course... mountains. The kids loved it as there is a farm animal section where you can pet the pigs, goats, cows etc etc. Thats about it. If you are going to Innsbruck with your kids then you really should pop to the zoo. We took the mountain train thing, stopped at the zoo then finished the round trip by heading up the mountain further!! WOW!!! spectacular views. The kids loved that too. It will occupy you for 2/3 hours and give the kids some exercise and excitement and memories. Look out for the self cleaning toilet seats in the Loo by the cafe!!
