Museo San Miguel de Azapa

I really enjoyed this museum, The layout was good, plenty of space in between the exhibits. Learning about the mummification process of the Chinchurros was very good, plus the overall quality of the museum items was first rate! It was sad to see some of the mummified babies and small children. Pretty easy to get to the museum if you go to the front of the International bus station, there are Collectivos for 1900 pesos that drop you off at the front gate.

long and old history of human civilization on West site of Sud America
Impresiv dezine on textil materioal , pots, religious artifacts. "Great Museum clearly shows in a very scholar way about the history of the Chinchorro culture with mummies older than the famous Egyptian ones. We drove to the museum and spend the rest of the day in The Valley , Lots to see"

Small university museum, oldest mummies, good other collection
This is a fairly small museum, run by the local university. It has 2 parts, one mostly detailing the culture of the different tribes that populated this area throughout history, showing well preserved objects such as ceramics and tools. There is a decent amount of information, but only in Spanish. The objects are well presented. In the second part the focus is on the mummification proces and tools used, as well as the mummies themselves (some are naturally mummified, others went clearly through an elaborate process). In this culture, even fetuses en new born were mummified, unlike in ancient Egypt, where only the very rich could afford mummification after dead.
