Lago Chungara, Arica and Parinacota Region, Chile

4.5 (385 reviews) Spent Ranking #2 in Putre Bodies of Water

Amazing trip, unforgettable views!

Perfect organized full day trip from the center of Iquique, through Valle de Azapa, Poconchile until wonderful Lauca National Park and Chungará Lake. Freddie François was our tour guide, full of energy and a lot of humor! He taught us regional song and dance. Told the histories about important places on the way. There were stops to acclimatize, where we saw the local flora and fauna. Ended up with tasty lunch in Putre. Highly recommend!

    4 seasons in 1 morning
At an altitude of about 4300m above sealevel, this stunning lake is literally breathtaking. It's a MUST-DO if you're in the area. Birdlife is amazing, even at this high altitude. Bring warm clothes and rain gear as you can easily have 4 seasons in 1 morning.

Visited on a very cloudy and rainy
The views must be fantastic on a clear day, but we hardly saw the volcano at all during our about an hour long walk along the lake. The lake is also known for its colony of flamingos, but numbers have been drastically reduced due to pollution of the lake by the 2019 flooding that destroyed part of the road running along the lake. Still, there are a few flamingos left. All national parks in the north are free to enter (in contrast to further south!).
