Good place to visit

Walking tours of the white city were the highlight. Plaza de Armas was beautiful. Good exchange rate for currency con version can be found on Jerusalem. El misti volcano is impressive as it towers over the city

Yanahuara Scenic Lookout
Located 2 km from the center of Arequipa, this plaza housed a Sunday Market the day I visited. Many market stalls selling a huge array of vegetables, some huge, were set up. On the other side of the square, is the all important architectural Church of St John the Baptist built in 1750 closed to tourists that Sunday morning. Completing the square is the “mirador” a series of arches built in the 19th century on which there are inscriptions from local Poets. From here you gain great views of the city and Misti Volcano.

Good alternative to the center
I really enjoyed my stay in Yanahuara. Nice quiet area and I never felt other than safe walking around. It's about a 20 minute walk to the main Plaza de Armas of Arequipa but there are plenty of shops and supermarkets around if that's what you need.
