Tebinquinche Lake, Antofagasta Region, Chile

4.5 (1.594 reviews) Spent Ranking #9 in San Pedro de Atacama Bodies of Water

Go back 3800 million years

Tebinquinche Lake has a low profile in San Pedro : doesn’t even feature in the Rough Guide to Chile or on the tourist map, we only came across it on our sat nav! It is a 20-30 minute drive from Laguna Cejar. This vast salt lake contains microorganisms that can be linked back 3800 million years ago. Allow 1.5 hours if you wish to walk around the lake. It is exposed so take water and cover up. Clean toilets are at the entrance.

    Unique
This lake is situated at a short drive from San Pedro De Atacama. It is more of a salt flat with very little water content. It contains microorganisms that have been linked to several million years ago. It is like a smaller version of Uyuni salt flat in Bolivia, which in turn is the largest salt flat in the world. The views of this lake are stunning and unique. One may see some Flamingos around this lake. Certainly worth visiting for any tourist in San Pedro De Atacama.

    Awesome sunset
I liked it very much. Its not my # 1 in Atacama, but its great. This visit is included in the the tour called "Laguna Cejar" Its starts at 4 pm and ends at 8:30 pm. Its costs us$15 + us$8 for the tickets to the national parks. The first spot you visit is Laguna Cejar where you go to swim. The water is very salty, more than in the Dead Sea. Because of this you float easily in the water. Very cool. After that they take you to the Ojos de Atacama. 2 hig holes of 20 mts of diameter in the middle of the desert. If you have been in Mexico, they are open cenotes. You can swim there too. At the end of the tour they get you to Laguna Tebinquinche. This lagoon its half dry and you can walk over a thick crust of salt. Views are great. Colours are beatiful and the mirror effect its outstanding. There you wait for sunset enjoying a simple cocktail with a fresh Pisco Sour. I did it with Altiplano Aventura agency. The guide Arturo and his wife were great!! If you dont take and agency and you rent a car you can do it by yourself.
