Salar de Aguas Calientes, Antofagasta Region, Chile

Great salt lake with amazing colours

This salar was added to our itinerary as the road to salar de Atacama was closed off (not sure for how long, the reason given depended on who you asked). It is further from San Pedro de Atacama, but absolutely stunning, with a great view over the snow covered mountains in the distance, and the lower mountains all around the salt flat. Furthermore, the colours in an near the salt flat are amazing. We saw no flamingos here, but we did vicuñas. Other advantage is that there was no one, except the people from our small group, so very quiet.

    Breathtaking! Like a painting.
What an unbelievable spot. We did the Aguas Calients with Cosmo Andino tours and we drove on a perfect road from lakes Miscanti and Miniques. It is an amazing place, I can only compare it to a painting! The amazing colors of the lake, and the backdrop of high volcanoes, the freshness of the air, the calm and quiet. It is truly breathtaking!

Not worth stopping and paying - see it from the road
Stunning scenery, but you can see if just as well from the approach road, without paying. Like most of the sites in the area, they are presented/created in such a way as to provide income to the local indigenous people. The parking is needlessly far from the lake, and the path made with big curves to make the walk much longer than necessary. So that you feel you got a long "experience" for your money. Unless you like walking for the sake of walking, take your views and photos from the road as you go down the hill, skip the entrance, and continue driving to Paso de Sico - Argentine border. The scenery is changing and spectacular, as you are much closer to the volcanoes than in SP area. For me the best trip of all from San Pedro de A.
