Lagunas Escondidas, Antofagasta Region, Chile

4.5 (157 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #7 in San Pedro de Atacama Bodies of Water

Be prepared!

This place is absolutely stunning. The landscape and atmosphere is incredible, being able to see huge salt formations and swim in 2 of the 8 lagoons (the first and last). The lagoons here are much much saltier than Cejar and a much more elating experience. The entry fee of 5,000 pesos is great value. There is barely any walking, so wear sandals of flip-flops rather than closed shoes (it will make your experience much more enjoyable). Also, I would recommend putting your swimming clothes on underneath so you are ready and don't have to wait for the changing rooms at the beginning of the park. There is a different changing space for after swimming with showers and a large changing room which is easy) To repeat.. If you plan to go here or have been here.. Do not go to Cejar, it's a complete rip off when you compare the experiences (Cejar has a 15,000 entrance fee).

Lagunas Escondidas de Baltinache - Experience of a Lifetime!
Note there is another Laguna Baltinache that I think sometimes get confused. These salt pools are about an hour away from San Pedro de Atacama, and about 40 min of that is on a rough dirt road (B241). Be sure you're googling the right pools! The roads are well marked so easy to drive yourself, but definitely recommend a truck if you have the option over a car! There are 7 pools, of which you can swim in 2 (the first and the last) and there is a wooden walkway to guide you between them. There are also showers (no soap allowed) so you can rinse the salt off after your swim. Note the pools are not warm (chilly, in fact) so be prepared! Floating straight up and down like a cork was quite the experience...absolutely a must-do for adventurous travelers to this region.

There are 2 laguna baltinche, dont get confused!
There are 2 lagunas seemingly with the same name of laguna baltinche. One is 15 min from SP and the other an hour. The one entitled laguna baltinche is the one 15 min away (Havnt visited so cant comment!) This review is for L.Escondida. They were stunning. Go early in the morning (they open at 9). The road there is the typical gravel road. You dont need a 4x4 (4x2 is better but do-able slowly in a car). Taking the roads easy it took us an hour and a half each way. Start at the far laguna and spend time there then go back to the first one if you want. You have to work for this view and experience which is why there are hardly any tourists there and certainly very few buses! ...its worth it!
