Beautiful visit to Chilean Altiplano

Led on excursion by excellent Explora guide and driver to the Chilean Altiplano. Went to over 5k meters. Saw beautiful lakes and mountains. Saw zorro culpeo gray fox young female, llamas, Andean birds, cholollo rodent (looks like woodchuck), flamingos, avocets, and hoodoo monoliths. LIZ got some altitude sickness that immediately went as we descended to 12000 feet at base of Licanbatur volcano where we had a large brunch overlooking the San Pedro basin. Saw the antennas at Alma observatory.

    Stunning.
The views are stunning, just amazing how beautiful this barren desert can be, as the colors are so vibrant. Chile is truly a country of many contrasts.

Beautiful Lakes, and Cool 1.5hr drive from San Pedro de Atacama
We didn't mind the drive to these gorgeous lakes (at 13,000+ ft, BTW!). It turned to a dirt road fairly close to the lakes, but was well graded so would be easy for a car to do it (we were in a truck so definitely no problem). We drove ourselves but lots of people were taking tours, so the driver would drop them on one end of the lake and pick them up on the other, if they wanted to walk. The road was well-marked so certainly no trouble finding it...AND, we passed the Tropic of Capricorn sign on the way there...bonus!
