Pirate Museum of Antananarivo, Antananarivo Province, Madagascar

3.5 (35 reviews) Spent Ranking #22 in Antananarivo Speciality Museums

If you want to know the history of piracy

It is easy to walk past the museum as it is on the fourth floor of a building. However, it is worth following the signs past residential flats and offices until you find it. The museum is about information rather than artefacts. Information boards tell the history of piracy from Viking times to today, with of course particular emphasis on the role of Madagascar. Until I visited here I was unaware that many Pirates of the Caribbean had fled to Madagascar when the British outlawed piracy in the Caribbean. The boards are in French but you can request sheets with English translation, although the English is bit quite as detailed as the French.

    Interesting, but expensive
A small museum connected to a travel agency. In case you look for it, it's next to the hotel white place. In a 45 min guided tour you learn a the story about pirates not only in Mada but also in the Caribean. There's no real exhibits, only posters. It's certainly interesting but the entrance fee is exaggerated.
