Not very tourist attraction

This is not very touristy place but worth a sight. Just be aware of pickpockets at all times. Don’t take valuables with you, though, and you should be perfectly safe.

Fascinating, but I would not do it on my own
Have a local guide and get shown around, beware of pickpockets and keep valuables out of sight. Great street scenes, a lovely old French colonial railway station, quite a spectacle overall but keep your awareness high!

A taste of French colonial architecture
Having grown up and later worked in Madagascar I have watched Independence Avenue mature from the colonial age into the next century. The grandeur of the French colonial architecture remains if one can overlook the smog, dirty sidewalks, beggars, and the ever-present pickpockets. I would suggest eating at the Hotel de France. However, if you are there for dinner I would strongly recommend you NOT walk home, but ask the hotel concierge to personally choose a taxi to take you home.
