Laguna Querococha, Ancash Region, Peru

4.5 (17 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #1 in Recuay Bodies of Water

Lovely!

We stopped here for a short time just to enjoy the view and take some pics. The place is awesome! The lake actually is way bigger than expected and you can see that if you continue your way up to Chavin. It has cute spots for pictures and you can pose with llamas and horses (you have to pay a little bit but it's good since these people live from the tourism). There are restrooms right across the road which cost 0.50 soles. The weather was sunny but super windy.

    Favorite Lake in Ancash!
My first time in Ancash in 2009, we visited Lake Querococha, and it's been a favorite place ever since. It's just so photogenic and beautiful! Friends of ours own a little tienda with mate de coca, water, cancha, fried trucha, snacks, sweets, etc. There are also bathrooms here (50 cents fee) for road trip relief! While there isn't anything to do at the lake besides eat and take pictures, it's definitely worth a stop on your trip to Chavin or Huaraz! ***Make sure to dress in layers, because the wind whipping off the lake is COLD!

    Lovely lake
Being right by the side of the road Lake Querococha is incredibly easy and cheap to access, and surprisingly quiet. Most people visit the lake as part of the Chavin tour, but it is worthwhile spending a bit more time around the lake if you can. It is situated at 3980m in the southern part of the Huascaran national park, some 53km from the town of Huaraz, along the main road leading from Catac to Chavin. It takes around one hour to drive to the lake from Huaraz and 15 minutes from Catac. You can either go there with one of the buses going to Chavin or taking a combi first to Catac, then a taxi to the lake. The lake doesn't have a special colour but its waters are incredibly clear and beautiful. There is a nice trail going along its northern shores through forest of the native quenual trees. There are some good camping grounds at both end of the lake. This is one of the few lakes within the national park where fishing is allowed and as a result you can often see locals trout fishing. Despite being located inside the national park there is no fee required to visit the lake. There is sometimes a lady hanging around with llamas for tourists to take photos. Many birds, such as Andean geese, puna ibis and Andean lapwing amongst many others, can often be seen around the lake, so it is a good destination for bird watching.
