Great one day hike - but start early

This is a great one day acclimatization hike. Don't book with an agency, you can do this on your own. Take a combi (best at 7am) from Huaraz up to Pitek, buy your ticket there - if you are planning to do the Santa Cruz Trek, buy the "full" ticket for S./65 because it's valid for one week, the ranger said even a month - and start hiking up the well maintained, clearly visible path. Took us a little under two hours to get up there. There's a nice waterfall short before the end, a great place to sit down before you take the last part. That last one is a little tricky, because you need to climb with your hands, but nothing complicated. Stay on the left side of the waterfall, that way is easier. You should bring good hiking shoes and something for a picknick at the laguna. Then start your way down, whenever you feel like. Normally you should find a Combi for your way back at the top. If in doubt, ask the driver that brought you up, if there will be one. Be sure to start early, because clouds will come around noon and it's more fun to enjoy the laguna in the sun, than with a cloudy sky. Time is not the problem.

    amazing colours
This is a good one day hike that you can do without the need to spend ten times for it by booking through an agency. Just board a combi that leaves at 7am from the main street of huaraz about 7 blocks from the plaza just before the bridge that crosses the river. Get off at the very last stop where you will find park rangers that will make you pay for the entrance. From there it is about a 1.5 hours hike uphill to the lagoon. The last bit climbs quite a steep hill and the path divides up to rejoin at the lagoon. Both sides are steep and slippery but I recommend to take the left side path as it has ropes to help you climb. Once you pass this you arrive at the lagoon and are rewarded with amazing views both of the lagoon as the snowcapped mountains behind it. The colours of the lagoon are just unbelievable ranging from various shades of blue to green, yellow and white. The water is crystal clear. Take your lunch with you as there is nothing to buy anywhere on, before and at the end of the path. Make sure you ask the combo driver at what time the combi leave to go back to Huaraz, otherwise you will have to walk a good 2 hours to get to the first village where you can take a taxi or the occasional combi.
