Museu de Marvao, Alentejo, Portugal

4.0 (102 reviews) Spent Ranking #4 in Portalegre District Speciality Museums

An eclectic mix of local history

Located prior to the castle this museum is small and houses an eclectic mix of local history, dating from stone age through to more recent centuries. At time of writing it was 1euro 90cents per adult. The building is wonderfully cool and very serene. Small snippets of information give you a basic idea of what you’re looking at. Strangely there are an incredible amount of military knives and bayonets on display. Overall it’s a half hour self guided tour.

    Worth a visit
A small museum with an interesting range of artefacts which are very well presented with English descriptions. Well worth visiting having a very reasonable entry fee.

    Disappointed
Newly open thank to the help of EU this small museum could be a great place to understand the past and history of this amazing village. It is a miss. The prehistoric section is interesting and quite complete. Unfortunately we jump from the romaine period to the 17th century without any clue on how Marvao was built, what happen there, it's function in the establishment of the Portuguese kingdom. Nothing. When we asked the lady why the logo of the museum was a Maltese cross, we got a "no idea, go see internet". True, wiki got it covered! But what is the point of building a museum of wiki is the place to go?
