Museu da Tapeçaria, Alentejo, Portugal

Wonderful!
A visit here will completely change your ideas about tapestry. The exhibits look like paintings: the subjects are extremely varied and the original drawings together with the patterns and colours of the wools used are sometimes displayed beside the finished articles. There is lots of information about the designers and how the tapestries are made. Even if you have never made a stitch in your life I'm sure you will be impressed. Go on a Sunday morning if you can and you will enjoy it all for free!

Wonderful little museum about a modern artisanal industry in Portalegre
Fabulous little museum with a collection of tapestries created in the late 20th C by the wonderful tapestry makers of Portalegre. Of top quality, they are very beautiful things, I'd love one myself if it wasn't for the fact they sell for tens of thousands of euros. I believe the company (quite separate from the museum) is suffering quite hard times at the moment - I hope they survive to keep this wonderful industry going. One does wonder if the tapestries really need to be quite as expensive as they are... Do ask for the video if you're not offered it - is twenty minutes of old school VHS, but is really fascinating as shows how the tapestries are made.

Fine taspestry museum
This town is where the tradition of Portuguese tapestry was resuscitated after World War II. The museum explains the history of tapestry making in Portugal, and exhibits old and modern tapestries that are stunning. Very educational.
