Big Hole and Big fun

Really this is just a big hole in the Spit where salmon stranded by the tide swim around and try to avoid getting caught. But it is a lesson in people watching to see the joy and excitement when one is hooked. It is also worth watching a seal come in and pursue a fish. Great for just watching fish and fisherman.

Really just that...a hole where people fish...and catch things.
This is seriously just a large hole with very high banks in the middle of the spit, which apparently is a great place to fish for those fish who somehow end up in this area as the tide comes and goes. An interesting phenomenon to watch the anglers encircling the "hole" with their fishing poles at all hours of the day and night (because there is light almost all night long in July). Good way to fish without needing all the paraphenalia to actually be out in the deeper waters, I guess. Definitely something to witness, at least once. We don't fish, so was basically a novelty to us.

    Not my idea of fishing
As we were camping at the adjacent camp site we wandered over to watch men, women and children try and snag salmon in this water hole. It didn't look like proper fishing as they were using a 3 hook contraption but talking to one guy he said he had been there a couple of hours without any success but he also pointed out that a local had caught a fish nearly every other time he cast - so there must be an element of skill coupled with luck.
