Take a Day Trip to the Glacier

As part of a small ship cruise this year we took a day trip to the Leconte Glacier. I've seen a lot of glaciers in Alaska so I was a bit skeptical that this would be different. It was. The glacier is beautiful and heading in we saw a lot of interesting "bergie bits" - pieces of the glacier that have broken off and are floating away from the main area. We saw some seals when we got near the glacier.

    Beautiful, relaxing area
    We drove through parts of this wilderness area on a cloudy day in June. The views of mountains, lakes, sounds, and glaciers were beautiful. There was very little traffic and we had places all to ourselves. Some of the roads are gravel and some are dirt. We saw porcupines, Eagles, moose, and an awesome brown bear. This place is worth the time and drive.

    Fantastic Jet Boating
    We enjoyed the thrill of speeding over the shallow delta of the Stikine River, to the deeper water to view the Glacier. The Captains skill in dodging around moving mud banks was amazing. The boat came as close as permitted to the glacier, the vivid blue color of the ice was unforgettable We were a bit disappointed when the address system broke down and commentary could only take place one to one as the noise of the boat was loud. Lots of local history, and other information about plants, and a close view of a huge Bald Eagles nest all added to an enjoyable morning. On the return trip we saw hundreds of Harbor Seals. Good trip, we had fun. Even though we were pre warned....Only supplying drinks and not having snacks on board was disappointing. Such a little thing....but having such a big influence on the days enjoyment.
