Petersburg Mountain, Alaska, United States

3.5 (2 reviews) Spent More than 3 hours Ranking #9 in Petersburg Mountains

such beauty

This was my Alaska vacation 2003 May. Was just amazing, I went on the Petersburg Lake trail 3 days was just so nice. You do need to take your supplies with you and only take what you can carry. The peace and quiet its just an amazing spot to go. You do have to find a charter that will take you over to, State dock but fishing boats are going out you can normally catch a ride with them or you hire an actual boat. You hike up to Petersburg Lake where its just perfect, do you have to remember that you are hiking in bear country.

Montonous hike, but hey you can see everything up there!
Went up the other day. You need a boat to access it, as it is on another island from Peterbsurg, and there is a mile or two walk to get there. It rained quite a bit the day we went up. Lots of mud, new fallen trees, snow to badger-crawl your way up, and flimsy footholds. Near the top, it can be difficult. Takes most people around 5-7 hours top to bottom, and be prepared for black bears and stairs. The view at the top is pretty nice though, overlooking the back side of the mountain, sound, and Petersburg. On the way down, prepare your joints for foot and a half drops on uneven ground. Glad I did it, wouldn't do it again.
