Mt. Marathon, Alaska, United States

4.5 (132 reviews) Spent Ranking #8 in Seward Mountains • Monuments & Statues

Great Local Tradition!

We were in town the week before the Mt. Marathon Race and visited friends at Brownell Inn at the base of the mountain. During the week we met several people who were there training for the race by running the trail. It is said to be the toughest 5k on the planet. Seward celebrates the race every year when people from all over the world come to compete and enjoy being in such a glorious place and time. We walked part way up and got a real feel for what race day must be like. In it's own way it is a wonder of the world!

Go on a clear day! Expect it to be steep!
The day we went in the beginning of August was incredibly cloudy. We took the Jeep route instead of the racing route, as recommended by locals for safety. The trail starts off VERY steep with some loose rock, and then it turns into a nice pine bed trail. We took bear spray with us as we didn't see one person the whole time we were hiking. There is a cute waterfall along the way. To get to the end of the jeep trail, once you come out of the trees, only take maybe an hour even with stops. Then you can continue on a single-trek overgrown trail (bench trail). Definitely would have been better if there were no clouds so we could continue up and see the views.

Amazing views of Seward and Resurrection Bay. My brother and I decided on the not recommended trails; it's not recommended for a reason. The race trails are very steep, overgrown, and confusing. Stick to the recommended trails and you'll be fine - still steep. We also saw a black bear in the brush so take bear spray.
