Kennicott Shuttle, Alaska, United States

Leave the driving to the experts, so you can relax and enjoy the scenery!!!
We were planning to drive the gravel road to McCarthy with our rental SUV but after chatting with the locals and other visitors, we decided to take the Kennicott Shuttle. Boy, that was one smart decision - the gravel road is NOT fun with all the twists and turns; worse are the many hidden potholes. Our driver, Jeff, confessed that almost every other week, he would get a flat on that road. BTW, Jeff has lived in Alaska for 17 years and since he has properties inside and outside of McCarthy, he drove this road thousands of times. Chatting with Jeff gives us that chance to learn a lot about living in Alaska, its people and its beauty.

We were staying in Glennallen but didn't want to drive to McCarthy so left our car at the hotel to use the shuttle. Driver was right on time and the van was comfortable. The driver has been driving this route for years and we arrived right on time too. There are a few stops along the way with bathrooms and incredible viewpoints. The driver gave a bit of history, especially pointing out the several cars that had crashed off of McCarthy road (yikes). Keep in mind that there is a small baggage limit if you're staying overnight, but we planned for that anyway knowing our room at Ma Johnsons hotel would be small. Pickup was easy too; the shuttle in McCarthy will drive you down to the footbridge whenever you need them to, just ask, and this shuttle was waiting just across.
