Experience of a lifetime

When I was 8 years old I wrote a paper on visiting the bears. 63 years later I was able to do so. We were able to view the bears at Brooks Creek falls for over an hour, and downstream for several hours. It was so fun to see bears fishing in their habitat, without human interference. We also saw that each bear had his own fishing technique; diving for fish, waiting at the top of the falls and catching fish on the fly, or waiting for fish to miss the jump, and catching them before they recovered! I have been to numerous national parks. This is by far the best of any of them!

    My Bucket List Trip
To say that a visit to Katmai National Park and Brooks Falls is "life changing" does not do it justice. If I could go back tomorrow, I would ! When we neared the lower river bridge, I had to stop in my tracks as I viewed 25-30 bears at once. The 2 mile walk to the Falls (to see the bear named King Otis) is an easy walk and well worth it.

    An astonishing number of bears
There are 2 main things to do at Katmai: see the bears and visit the Valley of Ten Thousand smokes, the site of a volcano that collapsed more than a hundred years ago. I arrived too late for the valley tour, but the bears were amazing. There were about 40 at the lower viewing bridges, and 14 at the waterfall. You have to take a "bear course" when you arrive so you and the bears don't harm each other.
