Fossil Beach, Alaska, United States

Scenic drive

The day we went the weather on the beach was unpleasant—very windy and cold despite it being sunny and 75 degrees in Kodiak. So we didn’t walk the beach like we would have otherwise. There was a seal in the surf which was cool. The drive is gorgeous and Pagashak Bay has so many birds even in terrible weather. The road was only bad at the very end, maybe the last quarter mile. Big potholes but mostly avoidable and you could always park and walk if they’ve gotten worse. It looked like great beach walking at low tide and we will definitely be back on our next trip.

    Another Side of Kodiak
Take a drive out to Fossil Beach. You will drive through some interesting areas of Kodiak Island. On the way to Fossil Beach you will drive by the Kodiak Spaceport Complex. This is an active Launch Site. Lots of activity. Once at Fossil Beach the views are incredible. Lots of whales. After leaving Fossil Beach make your way to Chiniak. Another side of Kodiak.

    Beautiful but FAR FAR AWAY
Getting to this beach is a long drive (beautiful but long). Expect to pass the missile launch site and drive through a herd of buffalo to get there (seriously, buffalo). At low tide there is much to explore. You can campfire on the beach, hike, picnic. No bathroom facilities.
