Bear Creek Weir, Alaska, United States

4.5 (64 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #11 in Seward Bodies of Water

Worth a look, good stop on the way to Bear Lake.

We stopped by early on a Sunday morning, so the weir was not open. Nonetheless we enjoyed walking around the weir and watching the salmon in the creek. The weir is easy to find, and there is plenty of parking on both sides of the road. After stopping at the weir, we drove a half mile further to Bear Lake where we saw spawning salmon right by the bank.

    Concentration of salmon
Salmon are amazing creatures and this weir is an anassuming location at which to observe them milling. It is in the woods, beside the road. As we were staying by Bear Lake, we would stop for a short look at the salmon each time we returned.

    Worth the Detour
Out of the way, but a short van ride took us here on the way back from a kayak adventure and we found it really interesting. Not alot to do except watch the Salmon and the "Salmon Herders" work their magic in splitting females from males. The amount of fish there is utterly amazing, and the fact that they are coming back home to die is another crazy example of how everything on this planet has a purpose.
