Amazingly pristine wildness
This is an extraordinary isolated, beautiful setting. Set inside a 6 mile diameter caldera, last erupted in 1931, and ringed in snowfields, this is a wonderful hiking destination over tundra, lava fields, up cinder cones, and peering into the blue maar. Waterfalls were plentiful, and we saw a number of grizzly (one who visited our camp without any incident) and caribou. Surprise lake makes a great camping site, and we also rafted the river, after floating the lake and portaging The Gates. The flowers in June were spectacular, temps from the 40's/50's nights to the 70's day time, little rain and few bugs. And....no people! only animal tracks. The trip of a lifetime

Visit to Aniakchak Natural Preserve
Bears and Fishing abundant. The weather didn't cooperate, but despite the rain and mosquitos we had a wonderful time. The preserve is well layed out and the personnel make sure everyone is safe and that the animals are not traumatized by visitors.
