A first class museum featuring helicopters

The U.S. Army Aviation Museum maintains a collection of over 160 military aircraft, including one of the largest collections of military helicopters in the world. Approximately 50 beautifully restored, historic and one-of-a-kind aircraft, are proudly displayed both inside the Museum's 70,000 square feet of exhibit space and outside on the Museum's grounds. The collection includes many significant examples of early research efforts and developments in rotary wing technology and the evolution of the helicopter. Our public galleries represent the Army's involvement in military aviation from the beginning days with the Wright brothers and the early combat aircraft of World War I, up to the highly technological machines such as the AH-64 Apache and the UH-60 Blackhawk flown by Army Aviators today.

    An Amazing Museum
My husband, two adult daughters and I visited my nephew on his Family Day. What an amazing time we had to learn about helicopters. We were quite impressed! The museum also has a great gift shop!

    Excellent Museum but Bad Timing
We visited the Army Aviation Museum at Fort Rucker in June. Make sure to allow time to check in at the visitor center as you must pass a background check to be permitted on base. Once we arrived at the museum, we discovered it was closed. The door was open so we walked in and an employee informed us that a federal holiday had been declared only the day before closing the museum. Since an event was going on anyway, the employee allowed us and a few others to tour portions of the collection. They have a large number of helicopters from early prototypes to massive twin-rotor helicopters used in Vietnam. There are a number of old airplanes too dating from around 1912 onward including several WWI planes. It was an excellent collection. Plaques and information from panels describe the aircraft and explain the context in which they operated. The upstairs section has sections presenting the pilots themselves with halls honoring many of our country’s greatest army aviators. This is a fantastic museum which I certainly plan to return to on a day when it’s fully open.
