Scottsboro Boys Museum & Cultural Center, Alabama, United States

4.5 (11 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #4 in Scottsboro Speciality Museums

Nice stop while in town. All school age children should attend as well to learn

This was an unknown story for me and I came upon this place while going to shop. The museum attendant was very nice, welcoming and great to talk to. The museum is in an old restored church with vital history that needs to be taught and shared. Well done. I hope more stop by and learn about these boys stories

    History lesson
This is a must-see in Scottsboro. I spent time with Sheila Washington, who oversees the museum and she can weave a story. Scottsboro's history is America's history and here you can learn the true story of the Scottsboro boys. It is just beginning a renovation phase. Seek out this hidden gem.

    Worth the detour
I visited the Scottsboro Boys Museum & Cultural Center en route to exploring the Civil Rights districts of Birmingham and Montgomery. I expected to find a handful of exhibits dusted off and put on display inside an active church. As I discovered, the church used for this Museum is owned by the committee and has a permanent and extensive display of photographs, exhibits and artifacts relating to the Scottsboro case and the history of the Center. The host on the day of my visit (Loretta) mentioned the committee's long-term plans for the grounds (which leads to the railway tracks). There is also a plaque about the case outside City Hall (several blocks down). There are several books available to purchase, and the one I bought (by Dr Dan Carter) is superb. Scottsboro is hardly a hot spot for tourists, and the Museum & Cultural Center is only open two Saturdays a month to the general public, but if you have an interest in this case and American jurisprudence, or in the modern history of the South, make the effort to visit this Center.
