Kenneth R. Penhale City of Helena Museum, Alabama, United States

4.5 (14 reviews) Spent Ranking #2 in Helena Speciality Museums

Mining and Railroad History

Open on the weekends, this museum is chock-full of images, documents and artifacts from Helena's rich coal and rail history, the historic tornado, military history, "old timey" life and more! A great stop for elementary+ aged children, history, mining or railroad buffs, or anyone who's interested in learning more about the history of Helena. Fascinating artifacts upstairs with beautiful black/white photography exhibit downstairs including coal artifacts that you can TOUCH! I can't think of a better way to spend a few hours on a Saturday afternoon.

    Great city museum!
Great city museum with wonderful displays depicting both Helena, AL and Shelby County, AL history! Ken Penhale, the museum coordinator, is very knowledgeable about the history of the area, is very friendly, and is willing to explain the artifacts on display.

WOW...did not expect the amount of displays they have. I loved looking at the old pictures and learning about what use to be around the town and places I lived. It is very neat, organized and worth a stop in!
