Historic Railroad Depot, Alabama, United States

4.5 (12 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #10 in Decatur Speciality Museums

Trains! Trains! Trains!

This 1905 railroad depot has undergone a $2.5M restoration. Today one-half of the depot is a police station and the other half is a train museum containing original railroad materials as well as model electric trains(HO, O, and G Scale). An HO model train layout contains scale replicas of many Decatur facilities. A true gem.

Exceptionally informative and artfully displayed railroad museum
We were utterly astounded at the remarkable collection of thoughtfully arranged, professionally displayed, and carefully created railroad memorabilia. That would have been enough, but this museum also has on display meticulously constructed replicas of Decatur, Alabama sites in HO size. Imagine a duplication of the Railroad Depot itself, in this tiny size, all made by hand. Including bookcases and furniture visible inside the buildings! What's more, Eagle Scout projects such as an artfully restored luggage cart, model O gauge track system, and electrical signs made to function again, all await the viewer. Literally thousands of hours of lovingly applied craftsmanship greet the visitor. The detailed reproduction of other city buildings and historical sites of Decatur, complete with lighting fixtures, shows a community spirit one seldom finds these days. If you only see one place in Decatur, make it this.

Model trains, transportation history, and a restored actual train depot!
Very nice manager turned on the model trains for us. There were lots of maps and pics of the train lines that built this country’s supply chain. The building is beautifully restored. It is part of the very walkable historic district.
