Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge, Alabama, United States

Always see wildlife here

This is our favorite thing to do when we visit Eufaula. There is a dirt/gravel loop road that is open during the summer, and partially open during the winter (a portion is closed then to avoid disturbing migrating birds). This was our first visit in winter. We parked where the road was closed off and walked a short distance to the lakeshore, and we saw a small alligator on the bank as well as birds and an armadillo. In summer we often see multiple alligators at that spot. We saw whitetail deer on the drive in and out. The next morning we came early and parked by the impoundment and walked out on it and saw birds and deer. That afternoon we came back to the impoundment at sunset and watched the ducks fly in for the night. There are no restrooms at the refuge.

    Alabama Redeemed
We loved this park as well. We did the Bradley Unit walk, but found the Rookery fairly empty this time of year. However, we did see alligators and other wildlife. This was kind of creepy as it looked closed and we weren’t quite sure we should be there. However, we followed the website directions, parked at the Check Station and continued on foot to the right. The main refuge’s wildlife drive was awesome. We really enjoyed the drive – though we once again found ourselves on barely 1 car wide gravel roads with no directionals or one way signs. We saw quite a bit of wildlife including a baby racoon and a rat. Worth a visit.

    Neat to See
We stopped in on our way to Eufaula. Unfortunately, in early February there wasn't a lot to see. We did see a number of very large turtles sunning themselves on a log from the bird viewing platform. Our dogs (on leashes) enjoyed walking some of the trials with us. Its a very rudimentary refuge - no washrooms, etc. - but it was really neat to see. There are scenic drive roads marked 'Summer' and 'Winter' - we stuck to the winter scenic drives.
