Central to the civil rights movement
Court Square is more than the location of the Court Square Fountain. It is an important site in the fight for civil rights. On or next to the site, slaves were auctioned, Rosa Parks was arrested which lead to the Montgomery City Bus boycott, and the Selma to Montgomery March passed through.

HIstorical location in restored Montgomery downtown
Stand next to the fountain in this square at the base of Dexter Ave. A slave market used to occupy that spot. On one side of the plaza stands the building where the telegram was sent that ordered the bombardment of Fort Sumter and began the civil war in 1861. A block away is the first capitol of the Confederacy, before it was moved to Virginia. On another side of the plaza is the location of the bus stop where Rosa Parks began her fateful bus ride in 1961. The 1965 Selma to Montgomery march went right past the fountain and up to the state capitol building at the top of the hill. The entire sweep of US slavery, civil war, and civil rights history in one spot.
