Coon Dog Cemetery, Alabama, United States

4.5 (8 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Cherokee Ancient Ruins

Only one in the world!!

5.2 miles off Hwy 247. There are road signs coming from both directions. This started in 1937 and still active today. Lots of visitors from the Tiffin owners as their motorhomes are worked on in Red Bay. Sure brought back a lot of memories from my childhood as several members of my family were coon hunters. These hunters loved their dogs. Loved reading the sayings on the headstones. Not for everyone, but this country boy enjoyed it. I have now been to a coon dog and fox hound cemetery.

    Extreme pet appreciation
A great tribute to dogs. Although the graves are only those of coon dogs, all dog lovers will enjoy this peaceful spot while reading of the deceased’s accomplishments as champions. The owners’ affection for their dogs is evident on the epitaphs and the grounds keeping. A one of a kind destination that gives insight into others’ passions.

Coon Dog Cemetery - Only One of a kind location
In the rich, thick wilderness of Freedom Hills you will find the only Coon Dog Cemetery. The first dog laid to rest was "Troop" at this spot. Out of one hunter's devotion to his friend and companion the "Key Underwood Coon Dog Memorial Graveyard" was established. Some names buried here are Patches, Preacher, Flop, Troop, and Bean Blossom Bommer. In 2011, a funeral attracted over 400 people and several coon dogs.
