Turkmen Museum of Fine Arts, Ahal Province, Turkmenistan

4.5 (22 reviews) Spent Ranking #10 in Ashgabat Speciality Museums

Excellent Comprehensive Collection

This museum has a fine mix of Turkmen and Russian paintings, ranging from superb 19th C works of the greats to impressionists and contemporary work. There are also some sculptures and a few sections devoted to archeological finds. One section includes European (mostly Flemish, Italian, Dutch etc) classic paintings. A room is devoted to lovely felt wall hangings of contemporary and novel designs as well as some traditional felts and traditional carpets. One room is devoted to Horses as well it should be in a Turkmen museum, and these include fine formal portraits as well as horses in landscapes. The staff are all friendly and some are eager to use their excellent English, while others are best addressed in Russian or Turkmen. The museum unfortunately has no catalog for sale so if you like what you see and want to remember it, buy a photo pass. I spent 3 hours here but some might go through it more quickly, depending on your interests.

    Well Worth a Visit
Based on my visit, it seems not many people visit this museum. That's a shame, because their collection is really quite nice. I really enjoyed the displays of Soviet and contemporary Turkmen paintings. Several of the works are really quite good. They also have a limited selection of paintings by Russian artists and another section covering largely unknown Western European artists. The sections were just mediocre, in my opinion, and would not merit a reason to visit. However, a surprise to me was finding a really nice section highlighting archeological artifacts from several key sites around Turkmenistan, such as Merv, Gonur-Depe, Nissa, etc. The displays are really well done and I would say even better than at the National Museum. I did not expect to find this type of material at the Fine Arts Museum, so glad that I visited. I spent about three hours there, enjoying the Turkmen paintings and archeological displays alone and really enjoyed my time there. For most of that time, I was the only visitor in the museum. The only downside was, likely due to the low volume of visitors, the staff tended to make a bit of noise. At different times during my visit, there was some carpentry work going on, a team filming a documentary, and in general, just a lot of staff standing around talking. This was distracting at times and took away from my enjoyment, but I still highly recommend a visit if you have any interest in paintings or archeological art works.

    Good museum having good collections.
On the last day of our trip to Turkmenistan, before catching the flight back home, we had some time. We used this time in seeing this beautiful museum. This museum has more than two thousands items of sculpture, paintings, graphics, carpets, tapestry, ceramic vessels and precious jewels made, mainly, by Turkmen, Russian and foreign artists. Moreover, on its second floor, it contains an astounding collection of western Paintings. The Collection was huge and at times we rushed through because of the time constraints. We loved being there.
