Go Before You Buy a Carpet

I came to Turkmenistan with buying a carpet in mind and through the guided tour was able to get all the information to make an informed purchase. The guide will give some tips on what to spot in the carpet shops, dye, regional designs, materials etc, and that will give you a great advantage in choosing the right carpet. Besides the research point of view you'll see every carpet imaginable, including some very impressive 3D carpets and some that are optical illusions, not to mention the world's largest carpet, hanging in the lobby. If you don't buy from a government carpet shop you may find yourself back here to get the export certificate. Otherwise there is a wide selection of carpets to choose from in the museum, the last display as you finish the tour.

    Fabulous carpets
Turkmenistan is known for its amazing carpets and a tour of the museum shows you why. The carpets are beautiful. I suggest taking the tour as the guide explains the different styles and how the carpets are made. According to Guinness book of world records, the largest carpet in the world is hanging in the museum. The guide was really knowledgeable and after the tour showed me how to wear the married ladies hat and scarf. She did do because I expressed an interest and it was fun. Photos are allowed only in certain areas of the museum.
